A Mango a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
Though delicious, mangoes have not attracted much attention from the scientific community. One earlier study found that mangoes significantly lower blood glucose levels. But not much research has been done on mangoes since.
Now a second study has finally been published. And, it’s more good news for mango lovers. . . .
This new study is small but promising. 21 people were given 400g of mango pulp every day for 6 weeks. 400g of pulp is like eating a little more than one medium sized mango a day. The people in the study were between 18 and 55: some were normal weight, and some were obese.
Eating the mango pulp dropped systolic blood pressure by a significant 4.41mmHg in the ones who were normal weight, but it had no effect on blood pressure in the obese people.
The story for blood sugar went the other way around. There was no benefit for normal weight people but plenty of benefit for obese people: HbA1c improved significantly in obese people. HbA1c is the most important marker of long term blood sugar and diabetes control.
Both groups received mango’s benefits for atherosclerosis. A marker of atherosclerosis and blood clot formation was improved in normal weight and, significantly, in obese people.
