Gentle Chamomile Flower Not Gentle at All on Diabetes

Sixty-four people with type 2 diabetes were randomly given either 3 cups a day of chamomile tea or a placebo of 3 cups a day of warm water after meals in a single-blind study. Everyone in the study maintained their usual diet, exercise and medication.

At the end of the 8 week study, levels of insulin, HbA1c and HOMA-IR were significantly lower in the chamomile tea group than in the placebo group. HbA1c is the most important marker of long term diabetes and blood sugar control; HOMA-IR is a measure of insulin resistance. In the chamomile group, glucose went down by a significant 11.09%, insulin decreased by a significant 32.59%, HbA1c dropped significantly by 5.01% and HOMA-IR improved by a significant 39.76%, meaning that blood sugar control and insulin resistance improved significantly in the chamomile group. In the control group, all of these measures got worse: glucose went up 5.1%, insulin increased 2.5%, HbA1c increased by .78% and HOMA-IR climbed by 7.79%.

The people who drank the chamomile tea also saw impressive improvements in antioxidant status. Compared to the placebo group, their total antioxidant capacity went up by 6.81%. SOD, catalase and glutathione are all important antioxidants in the body: SOD went up by 26.16%, catalase by 45.06% and glutathione by 36.71%. Markers of free radical damage went down by 33.23%.

As reported by the same authors in a previous publication (J Endocrinol Invest 2015;38(2):163-170), the chamomile tea also benefitted cardiovascular risk factors, which is important for diabetics. Triglycerides went down by 18.35% in the chamomile group compared to 5.87% increase in the placebo group. Total cholesterol went down by 9.56% in the chamomile group compared to a 2.97% increase in the placebo group. And the harmful HDL cholesterol dropped by 8.85% in the chamomile group versus a 5.68% increase in the placebo group. All of these cardiovascular advantages were significant.

This study points to much stronger properties for the gentle chamomile flower and suggests that it may be a simple and important addition to the diet of diabetics.
