Vitamin C Helps You See

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. But a new study shows that diets rich in vitamin C can drastically reduce your risk of getting cataracts. . . .

The study followed 324 twins for approximately ten years. It looked both at how much vitamin C they consumed and at their genetic predisposition for cataracts.

It found that by age sixty, the ones with high intake of vitamin C had a 19% reduced risk of cataracts compared to people with low intakes. By age seventy, the risk had shrunk by 33%.

Interestingly, the study also found that, while genetic factors accounted for 35% of cataract formation, environmental factors, like diet, accounted for a far greater 65%. This is the first study to show that environmental factors play a larger role in cataract fromation than genetic ones.

This study shows that preventing cataracts is, too a large extent, in our control and that one way of preventing cataracts is a diet rich in vitamin C.
