Got Ulcers? Licorice Kills H. Pylori
H. Pylori is a bacteria that is known to increase the risk of ulcers and stomach cancer.
This double-blind study gave either 150mg of a standardized licorice root extract or a placebo to 107 people who tested positive for H. Pylori. . . .
At the end of the sixty day study, the people who were taking the licorice were significantly less likely to have H. Pylori infections. Depending on the test used, 48-56% of people on licorice had no H. Pylori, compared to just 2-4% of people given a placebo. The licorice root was 73.2% more effective at managing H. Pylori than was the placebo.
All kinds of studies have proven licorice to be as or more effective than ulcer medications like cimitidine, ranitidine and antacids. Antacids actually promote the growth of H. Pylori. So, while they may manage the symptoms of an ulcer, they actually make the ulceration process worse.
