Whatever the Cause of Your Nausea, Peppermint Essential Oil Helps

Nausea and vomiting are common problems of anesthesia from surgery, chemotherapy for cancer and pregnancy. Whatever the cause, the research shows that peppermint essential oil can help.
Serotonin is an neurotransmitter best known for preventing depression and insomnia. Less known is that there are serotonin receptors in your digestive tract. Even less known is that peppermint essential oil has been shown to block the serotonin receptors in your gastrointestinal tract that trigger nausea and vomidting.
So, could inhaling peppermint essential oil help prevent the nausea and vomiting caused by anesthesia, chemotherapy and pregnancy? The answer, according to this new meta-analysis of 19 controlled studies.
The study found that inhaling peppermint essential oil significantly improves postoperative nausea and vomiting for 2-6 hours following surgery.
When people underwent chemotherapy, the peppermint essential oil significantly improved nausea and vomiting at 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours and still at 96 hours.
When it comes to pregnancy, peppermint was significantly helpful at 46 and 96 hours.
This meta-analysis suggests that inhaling peppermint essential oil is effective for managing nausea and vomiting from multiple causes.
