Why Vitamin C May be Important for Alcoholics

Recent research has shown that drinking alcohol can be harmful to your health at lower amounts than previously thought. Amongst other problems, it can cause free radical damage and harm your liver. New research suggests that taking vitamin C can help.
This new study tried adding vitamin C to standard treatment in hospitalized alcohol abusers. The dose of vitamin C was 1,000mg a day for seven days.
Taking vitamin C protected the liver as demonstrated by improvement in several biomarkers, including protein, bilirubin and the liver enzymes AST, ALT and ALP. Vitamin C also improved markers of free radical damage.
This study found that alcohol abuse causes free radical damage and affects liver function and that taking vitamin C protects against both. Adding vitamin C may help your body deal with the toxic side effects of alcohol.
