Vitiligo: A New Use for Milk Thistle
Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder that causes the loss of skin colour in patches. Milk thistle, though better known as the most powerful liver herb, may help people with vitiligo.
The colour of skin and hair is determined by melanin. In vitiligo, the cells that produce melanin break down or die. It can affect the skin on any part of your body. It can also affect hair: you may experience whitening or greying of your hair, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard. Vitiligo is not dangerous or contagious, but it can certainly be stressful and annoying. Vitiligo could be the result of autoimmunity, heredity or a trigger, like sunburn, stress or chemical exposure.
Drugs are often prescribed alone or in conjunction with light therapy. But the drugs are unpredictable and can have serious side effects. So, this study sought to see what would happen if you combined the light therapy with a herb instead of a drug. The herb was the great liver herb, milk thistle.
The study was double-blinded and included 34 people with vitiligo. They were given light therapy plus either a placebo or milk thistle. Results were measured on the vitiligo area severity index (VASI).
At the end of the study, both groups had a statistically significant improvement on VASI score, but the improvement in the milk thistle group was greater.
This study provides the first evidence that milk thistle may be a good choice for treating vitiligo.
