New Super Green Powder: Kale!

kale prevents diabetes

You’ve cooked with kale and put it in your salad. Now you might want to put it in your green drink to fight diabetes. . . .

You probably know by now that kale is a super food. Long known in health research, kale has hit the mainstream in restaurants and recipes. Now it’s time for kale to take its place alongside other super greens like spirulina and chlorella as a super green supplement.

Forty people who experienced slightly elevated glucose levels when they ate were given either 7g or 14g of kale powder or a placebo in a double-blind study. The point of the study was to see if taking the kale after eating could lower the rise in glucose levels after a high carbohydrate meal. Since elevation in glucose levels after eating is an early stage risk factor in the development of diabetes, if kale could prevent the rise, that would suggest that kale could help prevent diabetes.

And it could. Both doses of kale powder significantly reduced glucose levels when they were tested after eating compared to the placebo.

According to the authors, this is the second study to show that kale powder can help you to prevent diabetes. An earlier small study found this positive result for 14g of kale powder. This new study shows that you can save money and get the same benefits at half the dose.

There were no adverse effects from taking the kale.
