Pregnant women may have a craving for dill: and we don’t mean the pickles!
Extra long labour is associated with pregnancy complications. So, a herb that could safely reduce the duration of labour would be a huge benefit.
A recent systematic review found four studies of dill and the duration of labour. Two controlled studies revealed that dill seed significantly reduced the duration of the first, second and third stages of labour. In the first, and longest, stage, you feel contractions, the cervix opens and your baby moves into the birth canal. In the second stage, you give birth to your baby. In the third stage, you deliver the placenta. Dill seed shortened all three stages.
Two epidemiological studies also found a significant reduction of the first two stages of labour.
This study could be of great value to pregnant women. The researchers recommend using dill seed in low-risk pregnant women.
