eating nuts improves sperm count, motility and morphology

Semen quality and count has been plummeting over the past several years, and low sperm count is an important cause of male infertility. The solution could be a simple, effortless change in diet.

Sperm count in plummeting. In our book, Sex & Fertility: Natural Solutions, we discuss research from the 1990’s that was already showing that sperm count had dropped by 40% in only half a century. Since then, the news has only gotten worse: a recent meta-analysis of 185 studies found drops of 52.4%.

Our book suggests many possible natural solutions. One solution may simply be eating more nuts. A 14 week study of 119 healthy men between 18 and 35 found that nuts offer significant help. While half the men continued to eat a standard western diet, the other half ate the same diet plus 60g a day of mixed nuts.

At the end of the study, compared to the men in the control group, the men in the nuts group had significant improvement in sperm count, motility and morphology. In sperm language, that means there were more of them, they were better shaped and they moved better. If there was a sperm Olympics, nuts would be a banned substance!

The study also found that eating nuts led to a significantly lower level of sperm with DNA fragmentation. That means that eating nuts is associated with significantly less genetic damage in the sperm. Since sperm with highly fragmented DNA lead to embryos with a poor prognosis, the chance of a successful pregnancy is hampered by DNA fragmentation. That eating nuts can improve the genetic makeup of sperm too is also an important finding.

This study suggests that simply eating nuts can help you and your partner to become pregnant by improving all of sperm count, shape, mobility and genetic makeup.
