Want to Save the Planet? Here’s a Surprising Place to Start!

switch to vegetarian diet for environment, greenhouse gasses and sustainability

When you think of saving the planet, you think of car emissions and recycling. But you might not have thought of this.

Over 15,000 scientists from over 180 countries just published a paper on greenhouse gasses and the environment.

The scientists listed several “steps humanity can take to transition to sustainability.” Among the steps, which were not listed in order of importance, was “promoting dietary shifts towards mostly plant-based foods.”

This is not the first time that the need for humanity to shift toward a vegetarian diet. In 2015, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee found consistent evidence that diets high in plant-based foods and low in animal-based foods have a smaller environmental impact on green house gas emissions and use of energy, land and water.

An earlier study by the Environmental Working Group found that animal-based foods are worst for global warming and plant-based foods are best. It concluded that if every person in America went vegetarian, as far as the environment goes, that would be the equivalent of taking 46 million cars off the road.

Other important recent studies have reached the same conclusion.
