spearmint essential oil next answer for pain

You know all about peppermint oil and its value for irritable bowel syndrome. But do you know about its less well known relative?

Spearmint leaf essential oil is probably in the gum you chew. But its value may extend way beyond flavouring. A review of articles on spearmint essential oil and pain found two promising controlled studies.

In the first, 101 kids between 7 and 14 took 0.4mL of spearmint essential oil while undergoing colonoscopy. Compared to the placebo, the kids rated their pain as significantly better.

In the second, 107 women undergoing caesarean section 0.12 mL of spearmint essential oil divided into 3 doses over a one hour period. Like the kids, they experienced significantly less pain than the placebo group.

These 2 studies suggest that spearmint essential oil taken internally may be an interesting and effective new way of dealing with pain.
