Ginkgo improves stroke recovery

Strokes are a leading cause of disability and death. But a simple leaf could solve that.

This controlled study gave either 100mg of aspirin a day or the same dose of aspirin plus 450mg of Ginkgo biloba extract to 330 people who had recently suffered an acute stroke. The study lasted six months.

The people who were given the ginkgo had a significant slow down in the decline in cognition, including memory and reasoning, compared to the aspirin only group, according to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Several other tests were administered, and, on all of them, the ginkgo group improved significantly more than the aspirin alone group. Speech problems and muscle strength were among the deficits that improved more quickly in the ginkgo group. Adding the ginkgo did not add any adverse events.

The authors concluded that adding ginkgo to aspirin improves both cognitive and neurological deficits in people who have just suffered an acute ischaemic stroke.

The study was not fully blinded. However, an earlier study was double-blinded. That study of 102 people with acute ischemic stroke found that 58.6% of people given ginkgo reduced their National Institutes of Heath Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score by more than 50% versus only 18.5% of the placebo group. The improvement on the NIHSS was significantly greater in the ginkgo group (J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis 2013;22(8):e557-63).
