cranberry prevents bacterial adhesion and urinary tract infections

Cranberry juice works against urinary tract infections (UTI) in an intriguing and safe way. cranberry works by reducing the ability of the bacteria to adhere, or stick, to the lining of the bladder and urethra, allowing the body to fight off the infection. This gentle action is way safer than the action of antibiotics that kill off your friendly bacteria while they kill off the guilty bacteria.

Now a new study reaffirms just how well cranberry works. . . .

This 12 week study included 72 people who were given either standardized cranberry extract or an acidophilus placebo.

While 89% of the control group suffered a recurrent UTI, the number was only 33% in the cranberry group: a significant advantage. There was a 70% reduction in bacterial adhesion in the cranberry group: once again demonstrating cranberry’s safe and intriguing mechanism of action. There was also an 87% reduction in urinary bacterial growth.

Cranberry’s effect may be even more dramatic. Since probiotics have a preventative effect on UTIs, the acidophilus may not have been a true placebo. The advantage of cranberry over a true placebo may have been  even greater.
