lavender significantly improves anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression are on the rise, affecting a remarkable number of people. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could pleasantly sniff your troubles away? It sounds ridiculous, but maybe it’s not.

Lavender has been known for centuries for its to relax and calm. Modern research has validated its use for anxiety and depression. A large meta-analysis and systematic review that included 65 controlled studies of lavender and anxiety showed that lavender improves anxiety significantly better than controls whether taken orally or inhaled (Phytomed 2019;65:153099).

A large new systematic review and meta-analysis has added more evidence to the value of lavender in these times of rising anxiety and depression. It looked at controlled studies up until 2019.

The meta-analysis on anxiety included 30 studies. It found that lavender was significantly better at treating anxiety than no treatment, placebo or standard care.

The meta-analysis on depression included 10 studies. It also found that lavender is significantly better than no treatment or placebo.

This important study helps solidify the evidence for lavender essential oil as an effective treatment for anxiety and depression.

Though massaging with lavender essential oil is effective, the results suggest that inhaling the essential oil is even more effective.

There is now a very large body of evidence that inhaling lavender essential oil or taking it orally as a standardized capsule is a very effective way to relieve anxiety and depression.
