curcumin improves cirrhosis of the liver

Cirrhosis is the late stage of scarring of the liver that can be caused by several diseases from alcoholism to hepatitis. Cirrhosis can make the liver struggle to function, and, in its advanced form, it can even be fatal.

Medical texts say that the liver damage of cirrhosis cannot usually be undone. But, maybe it can!

Curcumin has become well known for its many impressive uses, but one of its earliest known uses was as a liver herb. Curcumin is well documented for its ability to help non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

In a just published double-blind study, sixty people with liver cirrhosis were given either a placebo or 1,000mg of curcumin for three months.

Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and Child-Pugh scores decreased significantly in the curcumin group, while they continued to get worse in the placebo group, meaning that as the cirrhosis continued to get worse in the placebo group, disease activity and severity got significantly better when taking curcumin.

Surprisingly, this study showed that curcumin can actually improve cirrhosis: a very important finding.
