black cohosh improves cardiovascular health in menopausal women by improving flow-mediated dilation and endothelial function

Menopause can be a time of hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, vaginal thinning and dryness. It can also be a time of depression and anxiety. A herb that helped all this, was better than hormones and helped your heart too would be great!

The best treatment for menopause, natural or pharmaceutical, is the herb black cohosh. Several studies have proven black cohosh to be better than hormones or drugs for both the physical and psychological symptoms of menopause.

Now new research shows that the great menopause herb can also help the cardiovascular system in menopausal women. The news keeps getting better and better.

This double-blinds study gave 62 postmenopausal women either a placebo or 160mg of black cohosh extract standardized for 4mg of triterpene glycosides. The study lasted 28 days. The goal was to see if black cohosh could help endothelial function as measured by flow-mediated dilation.

Though less well known, endothelial function is as important to your cardiovascular health as the better known cholesterol or high blood pressure. The endothelial wall is a single layer of cells that lines the inside of heart and blood vessels. A healthy endothelial wall preserves blood vessel tone and structure and protects you from atherosclerosis. Flow-mediated dilation measures blood vessel dilation and, so, is a measure of your endothelial function. It is an important measure of your risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases.

When the menopausal women took black cohosh, their flow-mediated dilation significantly improved. It did not improve in the women who got the placebo. Significantly more women in the herb group had improvement in flow-mediated dilation.

This study shows that black cohosh improves the elasticity of your arteries, adding cardiovascular health to its already impressive resume of ways it helps menopausal women.
