taxing meat would help health and environment

A new report by Britain’s Farm Animal Investment Risk & Return says that several counties tax goods that are unhealthy either for people or for the environment: over 180 countries tax tobacco, 60 tax carbon and 25 tax sugar. It is “inevitable,” they say, that the next one is meat.

According to the FAIRR report, animal farming is being increasingly linked to “a range of environmental, health and social problems.” They report that eating meat is linked to

greater greenhouse gas emissions than those from transportation

threats to water availability

threats to food security

increasing rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cancer

deforestation and soil degradation

increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance

Taxes on meat are already being considered in countries like Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

This report joins a recent report that found that adopting a plant based diet is one of the moves you could make with the greatest impact on the environment and a paper signed by over 15,000 scientists that came to the same conclusion. The FAIRR report is at least the second to recommend a tax on meat consumption.
