olive oil prevents and treats diabetes

A little known feature of type 2 diabetes is that it is largely caused by consuming too much of the wrong kind of fats. So, what’s the right kind of fats?

Bad fats, like saturated fats, lead to diabetes because when they are incorporated into the cell membranes, the cell membranes become insensitive to insulin. But what’s the right kind of fat?

Turns out one of the really good fats is olive oil. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis included four cohort studies and 29 randomized controlled studies.

This study found that olive oil consumption is associated with a significantly lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. People who consumed the most olive oil had a 16% lower risk of becoming diabetic.

But what if you already have type 2 diabetes? It’s still good. Consuming olive oil decreases HbA1c by a significant 27%. That’s important because HbA1c is the most important marker of long term diabetes and blood sugar control. Olive oil was way more effective than a low fat diet. In the people with type 2 diabetes who used olive oil, blood sugar levels were significantly lower. Olive oil lowered blood sugar significantly better than did fish oil or polyunsaturated fats.

This study shows that olive oil is an effective addition to your diet if you want to treat and prevent type 2 diabetes.

We have looked at studies before that point to a benefit of olive oil for diabetes.
