spirulina is a valuable antioxidant that helps with weight loss and cholesterol

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is exploding with nutrients and antioxidants. Three new studies give three new reasons to take it every day.

1. Losing Weight
A small, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of 38 obese or overweight people has found that taking 1g of spirulina twice a day is more effective for losing weight than following a calorie reduced diet alone. Spirulina significantly reduces body fat and weight, body mass index and waist circumference. Spirulina significantly reduced appetite. It also significantly improved triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and the ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol as well as markers of inflammation (Complement Ther Med 2018;40:106-112).

2. Beating Cholesterol
As the weight loss study suggested, spirulina has power over cholesterol. A brand new meta-analysis and systematic review put that suggestion to the test. The review included 8 studies of type 2 diabetics. Spirulina significantly reduced the heart hazardous triglycerides and LDL cholesterol as well as the even more dangerous VLDL cholesterol. It significantly increased the heart healthy HDL cholesterol. Though it did not affect blood sugar after eating or long term markers of blood sugar control, spirulina did significantly reduce fasting blood sugar. This study presents convincing evidence of spirulina’s power over cholesterol (J Diabetes Metab Disord 2021 Jun;20(1):883-892).

3. Antioxidant Power
This systematic review and meta-analysis of spirulina’s antioxidant powers that included 9 studies of 415 people found that spirulina significantly improves total antioxidant capacity (Int J Clin Pract 2021 Jul 8:e14618).

There’s three more big reasons to take spirulina.
