pomegranate juice protects your skin from damage from the sun

In vitro laboratory studies have suggested that pomegranate can protect your skin from damage from the sun. A new study supports that theory: pomegranate may be a delicious sun screen.

The idea that a delicious food or drink can protect you from the sun is not new. Dark chocolate protects your skin from the sun (J Nutr 2006;136:1565-9; Lett Appl Microbiol 2009;49:354-60) and so does topical green tea (J Am Acad Dermatol 2001;44:425-32). Dark chocolate, green tea and pomegranate juice all have in common that they are rich sources of flavonoid antioxidants.

Pomegranate may protect your skin from the sun whether you drink it as a juice or take it as a supplement. 74 people were given either a placebo, 1000mg of pomegranate extract or 8 ounces of pomegranate juice. The pomegranate extract contained the same amount of polyphenol flavonoids as the 8 ounces of juice.

Each person was exposed to ultraviolet (UVB) radiation. But the ones who drank the pomegranate juice or took the pomegranate supplement didn’t develop erythema, or redness of the skin caused by sunburn, until they had been exposed to significantly more UV radiation.

This study suggests that, whether you drink pomegranate juice or take it as a supplement, it is able to provide significant protection against skin damage caused by the sun.
