fennel essential oil and curcumin improve irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is becoming an epidemic in our culture. So many people have it, and there is little that conventional medicine can do to help control it. Fortunately, natural help is on the way.

The most important treatment for IBS is enteric coated peppermint oil. The largest, best designed meta-analysis of enteric coated peppermint oil has recently proven it to be significantly better than placebo (BMC Complement Altern Med 2019;19:21). The peppermint oil can also be combined with caraway oil. Now a new essential oil is joining the team of helpful essential oils for IBS. Meet fennel oil.

Two studies have now shown that a combination of fennel essential oil and curcumin can help people with IBS. The most recent was an uncontrolled study of 211 people with IBS that showed that the supplement significantly decreased the IBS severity index after 30 days and further improved it after 60 days. It also significantly improved quality of life scores. The number of pain locations decreased significantly as did the number of times they had to go to the washroom.

The natural supplement was especially impressive in people with diarrhoea-predominant IBS (Ann Gastroenterol 2018;31(6):685-691).

That study was impressive but uncontrolled. However, it joins an earlier study that was double-blind. The same combination impressed in this study too. This study gave 116 people with IBS either fennel essential oil and curcumin or a placebo for 30 days.

IBS Severity Symptom Score went down significantly more in the herb group: a 50.05 point drop versus 28.85 on placebo. Significantly more people on the herbs were symptom free: 25.9% versus 6.8%. They also had a significantly greater improvement in abdominal pain: 63.8% pain reduction versus 27.1%. Quality of Life scores were also significantly higher in the herb group: 17.4 versus 7.7 (J Gastrointestin Liver Dis 2016;25(2):151-157).

These two studies provide evidence that the combination of fennel essential oil and curcumin can improve IBS symptom severity, pain and quality of life.
