chamomile improves sleep quality in seniors with insomnia

Suffering from insomnia is an incredibly common problem. The elderly, especially, frequently endure sleep disturbances. But a traditional herbal remedy offers hope.

Chamomile is one of the most popular and widely used herbs in the world. Even people who are not familiar with herbs know chamomile, and almost everyone has enjoyed a relaxing cup of chamomile tea. Strangely, though, despite its popularity, researchers have almost entirely ignored this herb: there are very few clinical studies done on chamomile.

That is finally beginning to change. Research has now validated the traditional use of chamomile for anxiety (J Clin Phsycopharmacol 2009;29: 378-382). And now a new study supports chamomile’s claim to help with sleep.

The new study looked at seniors with poor quality sleep. It was single-blinded, meaning the seventy seniors didn’t know if they were getting a placebo or 400mg of chamomile extract, but the researchers did.

At the end of the four week study, sleep quality in the chamomile group had significantly improved compared to the placebo group according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

The researchers believe that chamomile may improve sleep quality because one of its components, apigenin, binds to benzodiazepine sites and causes a tranquilizing effect in the central nervous system.
