This double-blind, placebo-controlled study gave either 500mg of sage leaf extract or a placebo to sixty-seven people with high blood fats every eight hours for two months. . . .  The sage lowered total cholesterol by 19.6%, teh bad LDL cholesterol by 19.7%, the very bad VLDL cholesterol by 13.3% and triglycerides by 22.8%. At the same time, it raised the heart healthy HDL cholesterol by 20.2%. All of these results are very impressive and significantly better than the placebo. This is a new use of sage (Phytother Res 2011 [e-pub ahead of print]).
