saffron is as powerful for depression as Prozac and Zoloft

Imagine a beautiful purple flower that was as powerful as Prozac but as safe as it is beautiful. It’s not a dream: it’s saffron.

There is no question that saffron works: it has been proven more powerful than placebo for depression over and over again. There is also no question that it works really well: as well as anything out there. Study after study has proven it the equal of harsh drugs like imipramine and Prozac. Several meta-analyses have now verified that saffron is at least as good as the drugs with the crucial advantage of being safer ((J Integr Med 2013;11:377-383; Hum Psychopharmacol 2014;29:517-527; Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat 2018;14:1297-1305).

In the latest systematic review and meta-analysis of 14 controlled studies of 716 people with depression found again that saffron is better than placebo. Five studies that included 210 people proved it as good as the antidepressant drugs.

And the evidence keeps on coming. In one of the latest studies, 50 people with the average age of 65 and who were suffering from major depressive disorder were given either 60mg a day of saffron extract or 100mg a day of Zoloft (sertraline). The study was double-blind and lasted for 6 weeks.

Measurements on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale revealed that both treatments led to clinical improvement. But while 14 out of 25 fully responded to the Zoloft, 17 out of 25 fully responded to saffron.
