saffron significantly reduces severity of stroke symptoms

When a blood clot blocks blood flow to the brain, the brain is damaged, and you have an ischemic stroke. If you have an ischemic stroke, you may want to have this beautiful flower near by.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death. The herb saffron may help.

39 people who had just suffered a moderate or moderate to severe stroke were given either routine care for a stroke or saffron extract. The saffron extract was standardized for 20% crocin and given at a dose of 50mg 8 times a day for the first 4 days while in hospital and then 4 times a day from day 5 through day 90.

At the end of 4 days, the patients on saffron had significantly greater reductions in the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale. Compared to the routine care group, the saffron group also had significant improvement in their ability to perform activities of daily living.

This small study suggests that saffron significantly reduces the severity of stroke symptoms and improves the ability to function in both the short and the long term.

Saffron joins other herbs, like Ginkgo biloba and gotu kola in the list of herbs that can benefit people who have suffered from strokes.
