saffron lowers blood pressure in diabetics

Recent research is proving that saffron is more than just a pretty flower and a delicious, colourful culinary herb. It is a powerful and versatile medicinal herb. But it may be even more versatile than we thought. New research is opening the possibility that saffron may be a valuable herb for diabetics.

Recently, the possibility that saffron could be a promising herb for type 2 diabetics was suggested by a study that showed saffron can lower blood sugar and possibly improve long term diabetes and blood sugar control.

Diabetes can also increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. So, it is very interesting that a new study has shown that saffron can lower blood pressure in diabetics.

The study was double-blind, lasted 12 weeks and included 80 type 2 diabetics. Half of them took a placebo, and half of them took 100mg of saffron powder. The saffron led to a significant decrease in their systolic blood pressure.

Other studies have shown that saffron can improve fasting blood sugar and cholesterol in type 2 diabetics, though the HbA1c marker of long term diabetes and blood sugar control did not improve in this study (Phytother Res 2019 Jun;33(6):1648-1657). Another study found that saffron improves waist circumference and free radical damage, both important in diabetics, but not other markers of diabetes (Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes 2019 Oct 14;12:2107-2115).

A double-blind study found that 15mg of saffron extract was significantly better than placebo for both fasting blood sugar and HbA1c (Clin Nutr ESPEN 2019;34:130-136).

So, though not perfectly clear yet, there is an early picture emerging that suggests that saffron may be helpful for diabetes.
