ginger reduces postoperative nausea and vomiting

As many of you know from personal experience that is all too distressing and unpleasant, suffering from nausea after surgery is a common problem. A common herb is a powerful solution to that common problem.

Ginger is probably the best herb for nausea, whether it is travel sickness nausea, morning sickness nausea or just everyday nausea. This meta-analysis of ten placebo-controlled studies was designed to see if ginger could also solve postoperative nausea and vomiting.

When the studies were combined, there were 918 patients. The ginger significantly reduced the severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting by 24.7%.

Though the results did not achieve statistical significance, the ginger also reduced the amount of postoperative nausea and vomiting as well as the need for antinausea drugs. The failure of these measures to reach significance “may be explained by underdosing.”

The researchers concluded that ginger safely improves the severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting and “may be a useful alternative to antiemetic medications.”
