Metabolic Syndrome is strongly associaed with the risk of dying of cardiovascular disease. This impressive study found that the combination of two great heart supplements--red yeast rice and olive extract--significantly improved metabolic syndrome. . . .
The placebo-controlled, double-blind study included fifty people with metabolic syndrome. They each had at least three of the five following symptoms: abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated glucose.
They were given either a placebo or a red yeast rice (containing 10.82mg of monacolins) and olive extract (containing 9.32mg hydroxytyrosol). Red yeast rice is one of the most impressive natural cholesterol fighters: a number of studies have shown it to be better than drugs (Arch Intern Med 1994;154:1586-95; Arch Intern Med 2000;160:1177-84; Arch Intern Med 1994;154:73-82; NEJM 2009;361:2113-22).
In the red yeast rice + olive extract group, LDL cholesterol, oxidized LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides all went down significantly while increasing in the placebo group. The heart hazzardous LDL cholesterol went down by a huge 24% and the even more important oxidized LDL went down by 20%. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure both went down significantly in the red yeast rice + olive extract group. Cardiovascular disease scores were lower in the red yeast rice + olive extract group than in the placebo group.
This study adds an important combination to the list of natural supplements that improve cardiovascular risk factors in people at higher risk because of metabolic syndrome.
