vitamin D helps prediabetes

If you have elevated blood sugar levels that do not meet the threshold for diabetes, you may be one of the growing number of people with prediabetes. Prediabetes can mature into all out type 2 diabetes. But prediabetes can not only be stopped, it can be reversed. One important strategy is to take vitamin D.

In 2018, a meta-analysis of 28 controlled studies found that giving vitamin D to people who were at increased risk of diabetes because they were overweight or prediabetic significantly reduced their reduced fasting glucose, glucose after eating, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and HbA1c. HbA1c is the most important marker of long term diabetes and blood sugar control compared to control groups (J Endocr Soc 2018;2(7):687-709).

A new meta-analysis has convincingly added to that evidence. The meta-analysis included 29 studies that supplemented vitamin D in prediabetics. It found that vitamin D supplementation results in a “vast improvement” in fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin. It also improved insulin resistance and beta-cell function in studies that lasted a year or more.

This is the most comprehensive study of vitamin D supplementation for prediabetes to date, and it found that vitamin D exerts beneficial effects.
