ginger oil massage relieves osteoarthritis pain

Are you suffering through the pain of osteoarthritis? Then try this spicy type of message!

Ginger is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant herb: two properties that suggest that it could help with osteoarthritis. And several studies do show that it significantly reduces pain and increases mobility when you take it as a supplement (Arthritis Rheum 2001;44:2531-38; Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2003;11:783-89). A systematic review found that ginger reduces the pain of osteoarthritis better than a placebo and as well as anti-inflammatory drugs—minus their side effects (Nutr J 2015;14:50).

But now it turns out that ginger can help you even if you don’t take it internally. You can just massage it on.

Sixty-eight people with osteoarthritis in their knees were given standard treatment by their doctors. But half of them also massaged their knee with ginger oil twice a week.

At the end of the first week and at the end of the five week study, the people who were massaging with ginger oil were experiencing significantly less pain. Total mean score and function scores were also significantly lower on the WOMAC osteoarthritis index.

Ginger massage is a cheap, easy, safe addition to osteoarthritis therapy that anyone can do at home.
