systematic review and meta-analysis shows boswellia effectively treats osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and a leading cause of disability in people over 65. It is usually treated with NSAIDs, but NSAIDs have many potentially serious side effects, and they actually make the condition worse because they inhibit cartilage repair and accelerate cartilage destruction. A safe, natural treatment would be great. Here’s one!

We have discussed boswellia for osteoarthritis many times. Several studies demonstrate its healing ability for osteoarthritis. Now a systematic review and meta-analysis has put them all together.

Seven controlled studies were included. Six of them measured changes of patient’s rating on a visual analog scale. Boswellia was significantly better than placebo.

Four reported changes on the WOMAC osteoarthritis index for pain, stiffness and function. Boswellia was significantly better than controls for all three measures.

Six reported changes on LAI score. LAI assesses pain, discomfort, maximum walking distance and activities of daily living. Again, boswellia was significantly superior to controls.

In the five studies that reported adverse events, boswellia was as safe as placebo.

This meta-analysis and systematic review adds to the growing body of evidence that boswellia may be an important treatment for osteoarthritis.
