omega-3 essential fatty acids reduce seizures in people with epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that features recurrent seizures. The level of omega-3 essential fatty acids is much lower in people with epilepsy. So, could supplementing omega-3’s reduce the frequency of seizures?

To find out, researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. When they put all the data together an encouraging picture emerged: supplementing omega-3 EFA’s significantly reduced the frequency of seizures. The studies used different doses and lasted different lengths of time, but the best results were found for 1500mg or less of omega-3’s when it was taken for at least 16 weeks. That means you don’t need much, but you need to take it regularly. Though the supplement worked on both adults and children, it was especially impressive in adults.
