New research suggests a new supplement for building bone. And it has the added bonus of improving cholesterol. . . .

This new study was placebo-controlled and double-blind. It included forty-eight women with osteoporosis. Each of them received 1g of calcium a day for a year. But while half of them added a placebo to the calcium, the other half added 250mg of olive leaf extract.

At the end of the year, bone mineral density of the lumbar spine had decreased significantly in the placebo group, but not in the olive leaf extract group, suggesting that the olive leaf extract had stopped the bone loss in the lumbar spine. Osteocalcin, an important hormone for building bone, significantly increased in the olive leaf extract group compared to the placebo group.

This study suggests that olive leaf extract may be a new herb in the battle against osteoporosis.

As a bonus, the olive leaf extract also significantly decreased total cholesterol and the heart damaging LDL cholesterol compared to the placebo. And while triglycerides increased over the year in the placebo group, they went down slightly in the olive leaf extract group.
