ginkgo better than drugs for tinnitus

Millions of people suffer from the ringing, hissing or clicking sounds of tinnitus. There are pharmaceutical ways and natural ways to help it. But which should you choose?

Imagine the constant sound of ringing or hissing or clicking in your ear. Millions of people are annoyed by that sound every day. There are pharmaceutical ways to treat it and natural ways to treat it. Both work. But the natural way has one big advantage.

This 12 week double-blind study gave either the drug pentoxifylline or the herb Ginkgo biloba to people who had been suffering  from tinnitus for at least 3 months. The Ginkgo biloba extract was standardized to 22-27% ginkgo flavone glycosides and 5-7% terpene lactones and was given at a dose of 120mg twice a day. Though all had been suffering from tinnitus for at least 3 months, most had endured it for an average of 7 years and had tried many other remedies.

Both treatments worked and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Both the drug and the herb significantly improved tinnitus scores, loudness and annoyance. Ginkgo seemed to work better in people who were experiencing depression or anxiety.

Though both treatments worked, the Ginkgo worked better because it was safer. There were way less adverse events in the herbal group than in the drug group.

In treating tinnitus, the edge goes to the herb over the drug. Both reduced loudness, annoyance and overall suffering, but the ginkgo accomplished this feat with far fewer adverse events.
