combination of omega-3 essential fatty acids and Korean red ginseng helps kids with subthreshold ADHD

ADHD has become incredibly well known. What may be less well known is that kids can struggle even when their diagnosis falls short of full blown ADHD. For these kids that may fall through the crack, it’s nature to the rescue.

If your child is struggling, but their ADHD symptoms do not rise up to the full diagnosis of ADHD, they may have subthreshold ADHD. What do you do?

A just published double-blind study compared a combination of omega-3 fatty acids and Korean red ginseng to a placebo in 93 children with subthreshold ADHD. The children were all between 6 and 12.

The ADHD Rating Scale assesses inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. At the end of the 12 weed study, the kids who were taking the supplement had significantly greater improvement on ADHD Rating Scale total scores. There was no significant difference for hyperactivity, but the inattention scores improved significantly more.

The Child Behaviour Checklist measures ADHD and attention problems as well as psychiatric symptoms. On that scale, the supplemented kids had significantly greater improvement in ADHD, attention, social problems, aggressive behaviour, rule breaking and withdrawal/depression.

This study suggests that a combination of omega-3 EFA’s and Korean ginseng could be a big life improver for children with subthreshold ADHD.
