spearmint improves memory, sleeping and mood in old age

Normal aging is, unfortunately, associated with a worsening of memory. This type of memory loss, known as Age-associated memory impairment (AAMI), also seems to come with sleeping worse and mood issues. Could a simple mint help?

This double-blind, placebo-controlled study gave 90 people with AAMI either a placebo or a spearmint extract that was rich in rosmarinic acid. The study lasted 90 days, and the dose of spearmint extract was either 600mg or 900mg a day.

Working memory and spatial memory improved by a significant 15% in the 900mg spearmint extract group and by a still significant 9% in the 600mg spearmint extract group when compared to the placebo. 900mg of spearmint extract also helped people to fall asleep significantly better than people in the placebo group did. The 900mg group also had significant improvement in mood and in alertness and behaviour upon waking up.

This study suggests that 900mg a day of spearmint extract could help not only the cognitive problems that come with aging but with the sleep and mood problems that accompany it.

Interestingly, though this may come as a surprise, several of the most promising herbs for Alzheimer’s are members of the mint family.
