garlic improves all features of metabolic syndrome

If, like so many other people, Dracula had metabolic syndrome, he should have stuck around for the garlic: he may have lived longer.

Metabolic syndrome is one of the most important diseases of our time. It is one of the ultimate consequences of our modern lifestyle. It is a factor in heart disease, diabetes, fatty liver disease and obesity: four of the biggest problems of today.

Metabolic Syndrome is the increasingly common constellation of any three of abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar. It now affects a whopping 25% of all adults in the world.

Garlic can prevent and treat many of the features of metabolic syndrome. So what would happen if you gave people with metabolic syndrome garlic? Lots!

When 90 people were given either a placebo or 1,600mg of garlic powder for 3 months, compared to the placebo, garlic led to significant increase in the heart healthy HDL cholesterol and significant decreases in waist circumference, triglycerides, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, γ-glutamyl transferase (a marker of liver disease), insulin and insulin resistance and appetite.

This important study, showing that garlic improves every factor of metabolic syndrome, deserves a lot more attention.
