magnesium treats depression

Depression is so common and so debilitating that it is always encouraging when a new treatment emerges. A new study has discovered the safe, simple and inexpensive possibility that magnesium offers quick and effective relief. . . .

112 adults took place in this unblinded study. All of them were suffering through mild to moderate depression, with Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores of 5–19. For six weeks, they took 2,000mg of magnesium chloride—which provided 248mg of elemental magnesium per day—or added nothing to their existing treatment.

The results of this simple intervention were encouraging: PHQ-9 scores dropped by a significant 6 points compared to the people not receiving the magnesium. They also experienced significant improvement in anxiety. As a bonus, they also experienced a significant reduction in headaches.

Amazingly, the people on the magnesium began to experience its benefits very quickly: it took only two weeks for them to start feeling the benefit. The magnesium was well tolerated, suggesting that it may be a valuable new tool for depression: effective, fast and safe.
