peppermint essential oil prevents nausea and vomiting of chemotherapy

It is well known, especially by those who have undergone it, that chemotherapy commonly causes nausea and vomiting. If there were a simple, safe way of relieving it, that would be welcome relief.

Well, maybe there is. When people undergoing chemotherapy used peppermint essential oil, they were a lot less nauseous.

The study was not blinded, presumably because it would be very difficult to hide the smell of peppermint oil. All the people in the study were being given antinausea drugs while they received chemo, but some of them also applied a single drop of peppermint essential oil between their upper lip and nose. They did that three times a day for five days.

When people applied peppermint oil, their nausea scores were significantly lower. There was a significant improvement in the frequency of nausea, vomiting and retching. Peppermint oil significantly improved, not only the frequency of nausea, but the severity of nausea too.

Interestingly, even the Mayo Clinic recommends “Complementary and alternative therapies, such as acupuncture and aromatherapy” and says that they “may help you feel better when used in combination with medications.”
