chromium, berberine, hesperidin combination improves metformin in type 2 diabetics

When the best diabetes drug just won’t do, adding this potent natural combination will!

Metformin is the drug of choice for type 2 diabetes. But for 30% of the people for whom it is effective, it stops being effective enough after only 3 years. These people need to add something. Nature provides the something.

A new study looked at people whose type 2 diabetes was not being adequately controlled by metformin. For 12 weeks, it added either nothing or a natural supplement to their metformin. The natural supplement included berberine, chromium and hesperidin. Berberine is the active ingredient in several herbs, like goldenseal. In this study, they used 250mg of Berberis aristate standardized for 97% berberine. 200mg of the bioflavonoid hesperidin came from bitter orange (citrus aurantium) and the chromium was in the form of 200mcg of chromium picolinate.

The glucose profile improved significantly more in the supplement group. Fasting blood glucose levels improved significantly more than in the metformin only group. They dropped by 11.7%. Perhaps most importantly, HbA1c, which is the most important marker of long term blood sugar and diabetes control, dropped by 7.5% while it did not improve at all in the metformin only group. Free radical damage, which contributes to diabetes and its complications, improved significantly only in the supplement group.

These results may be even more impressive than they already sound because, for some reason, the researchers used a very low dose of 250mg of berberine: a much lower dose than previously used in diabetes research.

One study used the higher dose of 500mg of berberine three times a day and found it to be better than metformin. It was equally effective for improving blood glucose, HbA1c and insulin, while being superior because only berberine improved cholesterol and triglycerides. As in the current study, when berberine was added to metformin in people whose type 2 diabetes was not being adequately controlled by the drug, their blood glucose, HbA1c, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides all significantly improved (Metabolism 2008;57:712-17).

Yet another study compared 1g a day of berberine to the diabetes drugs metformin and rosiglitazone and found it to be similarly effective for fasting blood glucose levels, insulin, triglycerides and HbA1c in type 2 diabetics.

The addition of chromium to the formula is important because chromium may be the most important nutrient for diabetes.

This study is a potentially very important one for diabetics.
