grape seed extract improves cholesterol and cardiovascular risk factors in obese and overweight people

We often eat the fruit and throw away the seeds. If you’re overweight, this seed may be more valuable than the fruit that surrounds it. Even better, you can enjoy the fruit and take the seed in a pill.

Grape seed extract is loaded in flavonoids and is one of the most valuable antioxidants in the world. This new study gave grape seed extract or a placebo to 40 obese or overweight people for 12 weeks. The dose of grape seed extract was 300mg a day. Everyone in the study was on a calorie restricted diet.

Grape seed extract significantly increased the heart healthy HDL cholesterol, significantly lowered the heart harmful LDL cholesterol and improved the ratio of HDL to LDL cholesterol compared to the placebo. Increasing HDL cholesterol is even more important for your heart than lowering LDL cholesterol. Grape seed extract also significantly lowered triglycerides.

The visceral adipose index, which measures fat distribution, significantly decreased as did the atherogenic index of plasma, which measures triglycerides and HDL cholesterol and is an indicator of cardiovascular disease and obesity.

This study suggests that supplementing grape seed extract--which is a great way to supplement antioxidants—can also improve cholesterol and cardiovascular risk factors in overweight people.
