black mulberry beats estrogen for menopause

Menopause can totally interfere with a woman’s life. In the absence of any safe pharmaceutical treatment for menopause, the search for natural alternatives has taken on increasing importance for women. And now, the search may have discovered an effective, new herbal alternative to the dangerous hormones.

This pioneering study compared black mulberry leaf powder (Morus nigra L) to hormone therapy and placebo. There were 62 menopausal women in the 60 day double-blind study. The women were given either a placebo, 1mg of estradiol or 250mg of black mulberry leaf powder.

The big new is that mulberry leaf was better than estrogen! The herb and the hormone both produced significant improvement on the Blatt-Kupperman index, but the mulberry powder improved it more. The women who took the mulberry improved by 7.8 points (from 17.5 to 9.7); the women who took the estradiol improved by 6.8 points (from 15.4 to 8.6). Both were better than placebo.

While the estradiol group improved in emotional limitations on the Quality of Life score, the black mulberry group had significant improvement in functional capacity, vitality, mental health and social aspect and overall quality of life.

This study introduces a brand new herb to the pantheon of menopausal herbs for women by showing that black mulberry—an up to now little discussed herb—is at least the equal of, and, perhaps, even superior true estrogen therapy for menopause.

There have been other surprising new herbs introduced for menopause lately, including stinging nettle, tomato juice, fenugreek and fennel.
