fenugreek increases testosterone and muscle while decreasing fat

Want to enhance the effects of your workout? Fenugreek may be a powerful answer for men.

Well known for cooking, but less well known as a healing herb, fenugreek actually has many uses. It is an important diabetes herb. For women, it has demonstrated its value for treating menopause, painful periods, polycystic ovarian syndrome and for promoting breasts milk.

But, what about for men?

New research points to the power of fenugreek for building muscle and beating fat. 138 men were given either a placebo, 300mg of fenugreek extract or 600mg of fenugreek extract for 8 weeks in a double-blind study. All of them engaged in whole-body calisthenics 3 times a week.

By the end of the study, both the 300mg and the 600mg fenugreek groups had significantly greater improvement in their maximal leg press than men in the placebo group. The men in the higher dose group decreased their body mass by 1.2kg and their body fat by 1.4% while increasing their lean mass by 1.8%.

Men in the 600mg group also increased their levels of testosterone.

This is not the first study to show fenugreek’s effect on testosterone and men’s health. A previous double-blind study of the same 600mg dose of fenugreek extract found that the herb significantly improved the Aging Male Symptom questionnaire, a measure of male hormone deficiency. Testosterone increased on the fenugreek compared to the placebo. Fenugreek improved sexual function, including the number of morning erections and the frequency of sexual activity. The researchers concluded that fenugreek is a safe and effective treatment for reducing testosterone deficiency and improving sexual function (Aging Male 2016;20:1-9).

These two studies taken together provide the introduction to men of the herb fenugreek, a herb that may help to boost testosterone and build strength.
