dark chocolate improves cholesterol and insulin resistance

Chocolate’s not just delicious: dark chocolate just might be the most perfect superfood out there. Tons of research proves that dark chocolate is a super health food for diabetes and heart disease. And now, a new systematic review and meta-analysis that looks at the research published up until 2015 has shown that, when you put all the evidence together, dark chocolate is an important health food for diabetes and heart disease. . . .

This meta-analysis included 19 randomized, placebo-controlled studies that included a total of 1131 people.

Compared to placebo, people who consumed cocoa flavanols had significantly decreased triglycerides and significantly increased HDL cholesterol: HDL is the heart healthy cholesterol that you want to go up. So, dark chocolate is good for the heart.

As for diabetes, cocoa flavanols significantly decreased fasting insulin levels compared to placebo. Dark chocolate also significantly improved insulin sensitivity as measured by HOMA-IR, QUICKI and the insulin sensitivity index.

Dark chocolate flavanols also significantly decreased C-reactive protein, meaning that dark chocolate also reduced inflammation.

This new meta-analysis continues to reinforce dark chocolate’s status as a superfood for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
