green tea improves recovery from gastric cancer surgery

Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer. Worse, it is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths globally. And gastric cancer surgery is high risk with high rates of disease and death. It would be remarkable if simply drinking green tea could help. And remarkable it is!

Lack of normal muscle contractions of the intestines after surgery is the most common problem after gastric cancer surgery. Early drinking of fluid is an important strategy for helping. But what kind of fluid?

This controlled, but unblinded, study compared drinking water with drinking green tea. There were 77 patients in the study. The people in the green tea group did significantly better. They passed gas for the first time significantly faster, and they passed their first bowel movement significantly faster. In addition, they were able to tolerate solid food significantly faster, which is important because early introduction of food is also important.

The patients who drank green tea also experienced less pain and fatigue after surgery. Less fatigue is important because it permits earlier mobilization and exercise, which enhances recovery. The green tea seems to have also had an anti-infective and anti-inflammatory effect. Patients who drank green tea were able to leave hospital significantly faster.

Drinking green tea was safe.

This potentially important study shows that drinking green tea safely improves recovery for patients undergoing gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
