Everybody knows the hard part is keeping the weight off. One of the hardest parts about weight loss is that, after the diet program, after the initial period of weight loss, the weight just comes back again. This novel study looked, not at weight loss, but at the ability of green tea extract to keep the weight off after the weight loss program. Recent research has revealed green tea as one of the most effective weight loss supplements, but this intriguing study shows that it can also help you keep the weight off and maintain the benefits of weight loss. . . .

The study included fifty-five men and women who had just undergone an eight week weight loss phase of the study, during which they lost a significant amount of weight. To see if green tea could help them maintain the weight loss, half the people were given a rye bread placebo, and the other half were given rye bread with 1.1% green tea added to the bread.

After the weight maintenance phase of the study, mean body weight went back up by 1.5kg (3.3lbs) in the rye bread group but by only 0.6kg (1.3lbs) in the green tea group, meaning that the green tea helped them keep the weight off. The effectiveness of green tea was also shown by waist circumference increasing again significantly less in the green tea group.

One of the health benefits of the weight loss phase of the study was that systolic and diastolic blood pressure dropped significantly. But it only stayed significantly lower in the green tea group. Blood glucose also dropped significantly as a result of the weight loss, but, again, it only stayed significantly lower after weight management in the green tea group. The heart healthy HDL cholesterol increased significantly during weight management in the green tea group but not in the placebo group.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of any three of the five following conditions: abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure or elevated blood glucose. After the weight maintenence phase of the study, significantly more people in the green tea group had less than three of these conditions, meaning that the green tea not only helped keep the weight off, but also protected against metabolic syndrome.

This very interesting and original study shows that green tea is not only effective for weight loss, but is also effective for the challenge of keeping the weight off when the diet is over.
