A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain or by the rupture of blood vessels in the brain. When the stroke is caused by a block of blood flow, it is called an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes are the most common form of stroke. The stroke starves the brain of blood and oxygen, and the brain cells begin to die. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Canada, accounting for 6% of all deaths. In the United States, stroke accounts for 5.3% of all deaths.

About a quarter of all people who suffer ischemic strokes suffer cognitive impairment as a result of the stroke. Interestingly, according to the authors of this study, standard therapy is a natural therapy: folic acid.

This study shows that gotu kola is also an effective therapy. . . .

This double-blind study compared folic acid to the Ayurvedic herb gotu kola. The study included 48 people who had suffered an ischemic stroke and who scored 26 or less on an assessment of cognitive function. The control group received 3mg a day of folic acid and the test groups received either 750mg or 1000mg a day of gotu kola for 6 weeks. The gotu kola was a 10:1 extract.

The folic acid and both gotu kola doses were all equally effective and significantly improved cognitive function scores. On the memory domain of the test, though, the gotu kola groups performed significantly better.

This study shows that both folic acid and gotu kola are effective for improving vascular cognitive impairment following a stoke, and that, because it improves memory significantly better, gotu kola may even be better.
