ginkgo biloba improves cognition after a stroke

Ginkgo biloba may be the most valuable herb of all for strokes. And the evidence is becoming more and more convincing that it can help cognition after suffering a stroke.

Ginkgo is valuable for stroke recovery and, according to some studies, for preventing a second stroke (Br J Clin Pharmacol 1992;34:352-8). When people who have suffered an ischemic stroke take ginkgo, 58.6% of them improve by over 50% on the National Institutes of Heath Stroke Scale (NIHSS). How important is that result? Only 18.5% of people given a placebo achieve it (J Stroke Cerebrovasc Dis 2013;22(8):e557-63).

And when people who had suffered a stroke added ginkgo to their aspirin, they did significantly better than people taking just the aspirin in cognition, memory, reasoning and speech (Stroke and Vascular Neurology 2017;2:doi: 10.1136/svn-2017-000104).

And now a just meta-analysis and systematic review has looked at 15 studies of ginkgo and cognition inn people who have suffered a stroke. All the studies were controlled and most of them compared what happens when you add ginkgo to conventional treatment versus taking the conventional treatment alone. The results showed that taking ginkgo significantly improves neurological function. Adding ginkgo to drug treatment significantly improved scores on the NIHSS. Results were seen in as little as two weeks.
