Garlic not only keeps vampires away from your arteries, it also keeps atherosclerosis away from them. . . .

Atherosclerosis is caused by inflammation and plaque buildup in the artery walls. Atherosclerosis can lead to coronary artery disease.

Fifty-six people with severe coronary artery disease who were getting angioplasties and taking prescription medicines were also given either a placebo or 400mg of garlic powder twice a day for three months. They started taking the garlic or the placebo three days after the angioplasty.

While diastolic and systolic blood pressure continued to increase in the placebo group, there was no further worsening of blood pressure in the group taking the garlic. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), a measure of atherosclerosis severity, also continued to significantly increase in the placebo group while it did not increase at all in the garlic group.

This placebo-controlled study suggests that garlic can be taken as a supplement to prevent and treat atherosclerosis.
